Share of search vs share of voice: what each one tells you
Share of voice measures what you put into the market. Share of search measures what comes back. Reported together, they tell a board whether the money is turning into demand.
Share of voice is a brand's share of the category's advertising, usually measured as spend or impressions. Share of search is its share of the category's branded search. The first is an input a brand controls; the second is a response it cannot buy directly. Read together, share of voice explains a change in share of search, and share of search shows whether the voice is landing.
What share of voice measures
Share of voice is a brand's share of the advertising in its category. Traditionally it is share of media spend, sometimes share of impressions or ratings points, always against a named set of competitors. Its best-known use in planning is excess share of voice: the gap between a brand's share of voice and its share of the market. A long-standing finding in advertising effectiveness research is that brands whose share of voice runs ahead of their market share tend to grow, and those whose voice falls behind tend to shrink.
The term has also been borrowed by social listening tools, which call a brand's share of online mentions its share of voice. That is a third measure, earned attention, and it is worth keeping separate: it moves with news and controversy as much as with anything a brand does, as reputation is a search result explains.
What share of search measures
Share of search is a brand's share of the branded searches in its category, against the same named set. It records people who already had the brand in mind and went looking for it. Les Binet set it out at the IPA in 2020 and found that it tracked market share in the categories he tested, moving first. The full case is in share of search, the brand metric that leads revenue.
The difference, side by side
| Share of voice | Share of search | |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Your share of the category's advertising | Your share of the category's branded search |
| Input or outcome | Input: what you put in | Outcome: what comes back |
| Can you buy it? | Yes, directly | Only indirectly, through everything that makes people look for you |
| Where the data comes from | Media monitoring and spend estimates, usually paid | Google Trends, free and public |
| What moves it | Budgets: yours and your competitors' | Advertising, PR, product, word of mouth and news |
| Best used for | Explaining why demand moved, and setting budgets | Seeing early whether demand is moving at all |
Why share of voice is hard to measure in India
Share of voice needs your competitors' spend, and in India most of that is invisible. Television and print monitoring is sold as a paid service. Digital, a growing share of most budgets, is opaque: the ad libraries Google and Meta publish show which ads ran, but not what commercial advertisers spent on them. So share of voice in India is usually an estimate built on assumptions.
Share of search has no such gap, because the data is public. That is why we built and publish the Colleviate Share of Search Index for nine Indian categories: the response side of the equation, measured the same way for every brand.
How to read them together
The two measures are most useful as a pair, because each answers the other's question.
- Voice up, search up. The spend is landing. Keep it, and check that market share follows.
- Voice up, search flat. The spend is not landing. Look at the creative, the targeting and whether the brand is recognisable in the ads, before adding budget.
- Voice flat, search up. Something other than advertising is working: PR, product, word of mouth, a competitor's stumble. Find it, because it may be cheaper to amplify than media.
- Both down. The brand is losing attention it is not paying to replace. This is the pattern to catch early.
What to report
One line for each, monthly, against the same competitive set, as three-month averages so that a single burst of spend or a single news story does not swing the reading. If you can only afford one, report share of search: it is free, it is public and it measures the outcome. Then estimate share of voice for the months where share of search moved, to explain why. What counts as a good reading of either is set out in what is a good share of search.

Questions we get asked
What is the difference between share of search and share of voice?
Share of voice is your share of the category's advertising, an input you control. Share of search is your share of the category's branded search, a response you cannot buy directly. Share of voice explains a change in demand; share of search shows whether demand is changing.
Which is the better leading indicator of market share?
Share of search is closer to the buyer, because it records people who already have the brand in mind. Les Binet's work for the IPA found it tracked market share and tended to move first. Share of voice is the better explanation of why it moved.
Can you measure share of voice for free?
Rarely, and not fully in India, where competitors' digital spend is not published. Share of search can be measured for free from Google Trends.
