Share of search in B2B

The measure was built on consumer categories with plenty of volume. B2B has neither, and it is still worth doing, with adjustments.

Short answer

Share of search still works in B2B, with adjustments for thin data: use absolute volumes from a keyword tool, aggregate monthly or quarterly, widen the term set with product names and misspellings, and cross-check with Search Console. The searcher is often not the decision-maker, so search leads by the whole buying process. If volumes stay too small, consideration is happening elsewhere.

Most B2B brands discover the same thing when they first try this: the volumes are too low for Google Trends to return a usable series. That is a data problem, not a reason to abandon the question.

Working around thin data

If after all that the numbers are still too small, the honest conclusion is that search is not where your category’s consideration happens yet, and the budget argument should move to where it does.

The buying group problem

In B2B, the person searching is often not the person deciding. An analyst researches, a manager shortlists, a committee approves and a procurement team negotiates. Search volume reflects the first of those, which means it leads by the length of the whole process, frequently a year or more.

That makes it a genuinely long leading indicator, and it also makes it a poor basis for quarterly decisions. Read it annually, alongside pipeline source data: see B2B lead generation that sales will accept.

Category creation changes the question

If you are selling something the market has no name for, category search barely exists and share of search measures nothing useful. In that situation, track the problem language instead: the symptoms people search when they do not yet know your category exists. Growth in that language is the leading indicator, and your branded share of it is the real measure of whether the category story is landing.

What it will not tell you

Deal quality. Account penetration. Whether the right people inside a target account have heard of you, which in enterprise is the question that actually matters and which search cannot answer. Pair it with something that can: an annual awareness survey of named accounts is cheap, and it measures the buying group rather than the researcher.

Questions we get asked

Our B2B search volumes are too low for Google Trends. What now?

Use absolute volumes from a keyword tool, aggregate quarterly, widen the term set, and cross-check with Search Console impressions for your own brand.

How far ahead does share of search lead in B2B?

Often a year or more, because the person searching sits at the start of a long buying process involving several other people.

Does it work for a new category?

Not directly. Track the problem language people search before they know your category exists, and your share of that instead.
