Share of search and market share

The claim that search share predicts market share is roughly true, widely overstated, and useful mainly in the gap between the two.

Short answer

Share of search tends to lead market share, because search happens during consideration and consideration comes before purchase. The lag is roughly the length of the buying cycle: short in impulse categories, long in considered ones. The relationship breaks down in some categories, so treat the gap between the two numbers as a question to investigate.

The interesting finding behind share of search is not that the two numbers correlate. It is that one of them moves first. In several categories studied by effectiveness researchers, share of search leads market share by months, sometimes by a year or more in considered purchases.

Why it leads

Search happens during consideration, and consideration happens before purchase. In a category where people buy a car every seven years or choose a bank once a decade, the interest is visible long before the transaction. The lag is roughly the length of the buying cycle, which is why it is short in impulse categories and long in considered ones.

Where the relationship breaks down

None of these makes the measure useless. They make it a question rather than an answer.

The gap is the useful part

When share of search sits above market share, you have interest you are not converting. That is a distribution, pricing, availability or conversion problem, and it is good news, because those are fixable with things you control.

When market share sits above share of search, you are selling more than your brand strength supports. That usually means distribution, promotion or incumbency is carrying you, and it tends to be the position brands are in shortly before a well-funded entrant arrives. It is the single most useful early warning the measure produces.

How to use it in practice

Track both on the same chart, indexed, over three years. Argue about the gap rather than the levels. And resist the temptation to forecast revenue from it: the relationship is directional and category-specific, not a formula, and presenting it as a prediction is how a useful indicator loses its credibility in one board meeting.

For what it means for budget, the honest reading is that share of search responds to demand creation rather than demand capture, which is the argument in brand versus performance. If you want to move it, more retargeting will not do it.

Questions we get asked

Does share of search predict market share?

It leads it in many categories, by roughly the length of the buying cycle. It is directional rather than a formula, and it breaks down where distribution, price or intermediaries dominate.

What does it mean if our search share is higher than our market share?

You have interest you are not converting. Look at availability, pricing and the conversion path before spending more on awareness.

How far ahead does it lead?

Weeks in impulse categories, several months to over a year in considered purchases such as cars, property and financial products.
