Why AI answers do not mention your brand: six checks, in order
When a buyer asks an assistant who to hire and your name is not in the answer, the cause is usually ordinary and fixable. Check the cheap things first.
Usually for one of six reasons: no page states plainly what you do, crawlers cannot reach your pages, nobody independent says it either, your name collides with something else, you do not match the question asked, or you are being asked in a language you have not covered. Each has a cheap test; run them in this order.
First, measure honestly. One answer that leaves you out is anecdote; a low rate over many runs is a finding, which is why the method in how to track whether AI answers name your brand comes first. Then work down this list. We have not seen published evidence that ranks these causes, so treat each as a hypothesis to test with your own question set, not as a law.
1. Does a page say it in one plain sentence?
An answer can only repeat what it can find. Write the sentence a buyer would want quoted, such as “Colleviate is a full-service marketing agency in Mumbai”, and put it on your home page and your about page, near the top, in text, not in an image. Test: paste that sentence into an assistant and ask it to summarise what you do. If it cannot, the sentence is not where machines can read it.
2. Can crawlers reach the page?
Check your robots.txt, and the bot rules in your CDN, firewall and security plugin. Some of these block unfamiliar crawlers by default, and a page behind a login, a pop-up wall or a script that renders the text late may be invisible to a system that reads the HTML. If you cannot tell, ask your developer to fetch the page as a plain request and read what comes back.
3. Does anyone independent say it?
A claim on your own site is a claim. The research paper that named generative engine optimisation, by Aggarwal and colleagues at KDD 2024, reports that content changes can boost a source's visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent on their benchmark, with adding statistics and quotations among the strongest changes and keyword stuffing among the weakest. The practical reading is to publish facts someone can check, and to earn mentions from outlets that are not you. Where a fact is yours to own, publish the data: our Share of Search Index for India exists partly for this reason.
4. Does your name collide with something else?
This one catches many brands. When we built the index, a stockbroker called Dhan had to be left out because the word is also Hindi for wealth, and searches for Mahindra also count Kotak Mahindra Bank. If your name is a common word, or sits inside a bigger name, an assistant has to guess which you mean. Fix it with a consistent description beside every mention of the name, and with Organization markup that links your official profiles.
5. Are you answering the question that was asked?
If buyers ask “how much does a website cost in India” and your pages talk about “digital experience solutions”, there is nothing to match. Write the page that answers the question in the buyer's words and gives the answer in the first paragraph; if the question is a price, lead with the range, as the buyer would want from website cost in India.
6. Are you being asked in a language you have not covered?
If your buyers search in Hindi, Marathi or another language, run the same questions in that language. Coverage in English does not carry over, and regional language marketing is a reason to check, not an afterthought.
What not to do
Do not fill pages with the phrases you want to be associated with, do not invent statistics, and do not buy mentions on pages that exist to be scraped. The click data in the SEO vs AEO debate points the same way: Pew Research Center found people clicked a traditional result in 8 percent of visits that showed an AI summary against 15 percent without one, so what you can earn is being named accurately, and that depends on being worth naming.

Questions we get asked
Why does ChatGPT not mention my company?
Common causes: no page states plainly what you do, crawlers cannot read your pages, no independent source says it, your name collides with another, or you do not match the question asked. Test them in that order.
Does adding statistics to my pages help AI visibility?
The research paper that named the field reports visibility gains of up to 40 percent from content changes, with statistics and quotations among the strongest. Results vary by topic, so test it on your own question set.
Can I block AI crawlers by accident?
Yes. Bot rules in a CDN, firewall or security plugin can block crawlers you did not intend to block. Check them before assuming the content is the problem.
