Marketing a firm that sells judgement
Nobody buys an accountant from an advertisement. They buy one because somebody they trust said a name, and then the website confirmed or ruined it.
Buyers of professional services are choosing a person more than a firm, so the marketing job is making that expertise visible and checkable. Published thinking, partner visibility and a systematic referral habit outperform advertising, which several professions also restrict.
Professional services sell something the buyer cannot evaluate in advance and will only find out about after committing. In that situation people fall back on proxies: who else uses them, what have they published, who do I know who has worked with them.
The regulatory frame
Several professions in India restrict advertising and solicitation, with the rules for advocates being the most restrictive and chartered accountants also operating under institute guidance. The practical effect is that the permitted channels are informational and reputational rather than promotional, which happens to be what works anyway.
Published thinking is the product sample
It is the only way a prospect can assess judgement before buying it. One substantial piece a quarter, written by the partner whose name is on it, on a question clients actually face, beats a weekly blog of summarised news. It also circulates inside a client organisation when the person who found it needs to convince somebody else, which is the real mechanism: see content that earns links.
Partner visibility is the channel
Clients hire people. A firm whose partners are invisible is asking to be selected on price. Speaking, writing under their own names, and being quoted in trade press all do more than any firm-level campaign.
Referral, as a system
Most firms get most of their work from referral and manage none of it. Keep a list of the people who send work, know what they need, stay in contact when you want nothing, and tell them specifically what a good referral looks like. That last part is where most referral flow is lost: people cannot refer what they cannot describe.
What the website is for
Confirming a recommendation. Someone has heard your name and is checking. That means people, credentials, sectors, published work and an obvious way to make contact. Not a carousel, not a mission statement, and not stock photography of a handshake.
Questions we get asked
Can law firms advertise in India?
Advocates operate under strict restrictions on advertising and solicitation, and other professions have their own guidance. Informational and reputational routes are both permitted and more effective.
What is the most effective marketing for a professional firm?
Published thinking under named partners, visible expertise, and a systematically managed referral network. The website exists mainly to confirm a recommendation.
