What video production actually costs in India, and what drives the number
Two quotes for the same film can differ fourfold, and both can be honest. The variance is almost entirely in decisions the brief either made or left open.
Video production quotes in India for the same film can differ fourfold, and both can be honest, because the variance comes from decisions the brief made or left open: the number of shoot days, which is the biggest lever, locations, talent and usage rights, post-production complexity and versioning. Settle them early and treat the agreed treatment as the contract.
A production quote is a stack of day rates, kit, people, locations and post. Almost everything that moves the total is decided before anyone picks up a camera, which is why the brief is the real budget document.
What is in a quote
- Pre-production. Treatment, storyboard, casting, location recce, scheduling, permissions. Underfund this and you pay for it on shoot day at a much higher rate.
- Crew. Director, DOP, gaffer, sound, assistants, stylist, and a producer who keeps the day on schedule.
- Kit and locations. Camera package, lighting, grip, studio or location fees, permissions, transport.
- Talent. Fees plus usage rights, which are a separate negotiation and frequently the line that surprises people later.
- Post. Edit, colour grade, sound design, music licensing, motion graphics, and versioning for each placement.
The decisions that move the number most
Number of shoot days. The single biggest lever. Every day carries the whole crew and kit, so a script that can be shot in one day rather than two is worth more than any negotiation.
Locations. A controlled studio is usually cheaper than three real locations with travel, permissions and weather risk.
Talent and usage. A known face is not just a fee; it is a fee multiplied by territory and duration. Two years of all-media usage costs a multiple of six months of digital.
Post complexity. Motion graphics, visual effects and elaborate sound design are open-ended in a way that shooting is not.
Versioning. Ten cut-downs in five aspect ratios is a real edit workload, and it should be in the brief rather than requested after delivery.
Where you can save safely
Shoot several things at once. If you need a brand film, product stills and social cut-downs, plan them into the same days with the same crew. This is by a distance the most effective saving available, and it requires only that the brief exists early enough.
Cast real people where the story allows it. Use fewer locations and light them better. Shoot for the edit you have actually planned rather than covering every possibility. And agree the number of revision rounds in writing, because unlimited revisions are paid for somewhere, usually in the next quote.
Where saving will show
Sound. Bad audio reads as amateurish faster than any other flaw, and fixing it in post is expensive when it is possible at all. Grading, which is what makes footage look like a film rather than a recording. Enough pre-production time to have solved the problems before the day. And the producer, who is the person preventing the expensive chaos you will otherwise pay for in overtime.
Treat the treatment as the contract
Everything above argues for the same discipline: decide the look, the shot list, the locations, the talent, the deliverables and the usage before the shoot is booked. A quote against a vague brief is a guess, and the gap between the guess and reality is always settled in the client’s favour on paper and against them on screen. Our view of what a brief owes the work is in the brief is not the idea.
Questions we get asked
How much does a corporate film cost in India?
A simple single-day corporate film with a small crew commonly runs a few lakh rupees. Multi-day campaign films with talent, locations and full post run to several times that. The shoot-day count and usage rights drive most of the variance.
Why are two quotes for the same film so different?
Usually because they assume different shoot days, crew sizes, talent usage and post scope. Ask each supplier to state those assumptions and the comparison becomes possible.
Can we reuse footage across campaigns?
Only within the usage rights you bought, for talent, music and stock. Agree the territory and duration up front; extending later is always more expensive than buying it at the start.
