Travel marketing between inspiration and booking

Somebody decides to go somewhere months before they book it, and the brand that shaped the decision is rarely the one that gets the credit.

Short answer

Travel decisions have a long inspiration phase and a short booking window. Win the first with content and social proof, win the second with availability, price clarity and a booking path with no friction, and accept that attribution across a four-month gap will always be partial.

The category splits cleanly into two problems that need different work: making somebody want to go, and making it easy once they have decided.

The dreaming phase

Long, unstructured, and dominated by other people's photographs. This is where social, creators and genuinely useful content earn their place, and where direct response measurement will tell you almost nothing. The honest measure here is branded search and direct traffic over months, not attributed bookings this week.

The booking window

Short, decisive and ruthless about friction. Price visible, availability accurate, cancellation terms plain, payment options that work locally, and a path that survives a phone on patchy data. Most direct booking losses happen here rather than in the choice of property.

Platform dependence

Booking platforms bring volume at a commission that hurts and own the customer afterwards. The workable position is to use them for discovery while making the direct route genuinely better: a rate advantage where parity rules allow, a guaranteed upgrade, flexibility, something concrete. Parity with nothing extra does not move anybody, which is the same argument as in hospitality and restaurant marketing.

Seasonality is the planning problem

Demand arrives in waves set by holidays, weather and school calendars, and the marketing has to run months ahead of each one. Off-peak needs a different proposition rather than a discount: a reason the shoulder season is actually better, which is frequently true and rarely argued.

Guests make better content than you do

Ask, make it easy, get permission in writing, and use it. Guest photography outperforms produced imagery on trust and costs a fraction. Keep produced work for the things guests cannot shoot: the room at the right hour, the food properly lit, the drone shot nobody is allowed to fly.

Questions we get asked

How do hotels reduce dependence on booking platforms?

Give the direct channel a concrete advantage and remove friction from the booking path. Use platforms for discovery and off-peak fill rather than for repeat guests.

How do you attribute a travel booking made months after the inspiration?

Imperfectly. Use branded search and direct traffic trends for the inspiration phase and last-click only for the booking window, and do not let the attributed number set the whole budget.
