Automotive marketing and the dealership gap

The brand spends nationally, the dealer sells locally, and the enquiry falls into the space between them.

Short answer

The constraint is almost never lead volume, it is the handover between the digital enquiry and the dealership. Measure cost per test drive and cost per retail rather than cost per lead, and fix response time before increasing media spend.

Car buying in India is researched online for months and completed in a showroom. That split creates the category's defining problem: the people spending the media budget and the people closing the sale work for different companies with different incentives.

Where the leads die

An enquiry arrives at the dealership, sits in a spreadsheet, and is called the next afternoon by somebody with forty others. The buyer, meanwhile, enquired with three brands in the same hour. Response time decides the outcome more reliably than creative, targeting or offer.

This is an operations problem that marketing budget cannot solve, and it is usually cheaper to fix. The same pattern governs property, as set out in real estate marketing that produces site visits.

Measure deeper than the lead

Cost per lead flatters everything. Price the funnel to cost per contactable lead, cost per test drive and cost per retail. Reallocate on the last two. The sources that look expensive per lead are frequently the cheapest per sale.

What buyers actually research

Mileage and running cost, service network reach, resale value, waiting period, and ownership reviews from people who have had the vehicle a year. Brand films do not answer any of those, and a brand that answers them properly on its own site intercepts the research instead of leaving it to forums and reviewers.

Electric adds three anxieties

Range in real conditions, charging access on the routes the buyer actually drives, and battery life with the cost of replacement. These are the objections, and evasive messaging about sustainability does not touch them. Specific, honest answers do.

Local is the whole last mile

Dealership listings, accurate hours, service reviews and map visibility decide which showroom gets the visit. Most national campaigns underinvest here while competing hard for the national search term: see local SEO for service businesses.

Questions we get asked

What is the most important metric in automotive marketing?

Cost per test drive and cost per retail. Cost per lead hides the handover losses where most of the budget actually leaks.

How quickly should automotive enquiries be contacted?

Within minutes. Buyers enquire with several brands in one session, and the first credible response usually gets the test drive.
